Language

Although English is spoken throughout the island, the local people continue to speak their own Chamorro language. Some, particularly older residents who lived on Guam during the World War II period of Japanese occupation, speak Japanese, as well.

As in other destinations, the fastest way to make friends on Guam is to learn a bit of the local language. Here are a few of the popular expressions you'll hear every day.

Guam is rapidly emerging as a regional learning center. Students from Micronesia, the United States, and several Asian countries exchange class with students from Guam in the academically and culturally rich atmosphere of the University of Guam.

The Micronesian Area Research Center (MARC) was established at the University of Guam in 1967 to build and gather resources for research about the region. This world class center houses the most complete collection of information about Micronesia. The center has a resource collection, an extensive library, and is open to the public.

The University of Guam Marine Laboratory, established in 1970, is another world-class facility, internationally known for its contributions to marine-related research. The laboratory also works in the areas of education and community service. Located on the campus, east-side of Pago Bay, the center features a two-story laboratory and teaching facility with a seawater system, and a technical wing housing a specialty shop, boats and marine equipment.

The laboratory hosts tours for school groups and other interested parties. Advance arrangements are recommended, but walk-in visitors are welcome.
